Director, UCR Health Professions Advising Center

Position Information

The Health Professions Advising Center provides information, advising, and support for students who aspire to graduate/professional programs in the health professions and wish to enhance their academic and extracurricular preparation. Professional staff and peer mentors are available to guide students as they plan their pre-health professions course work, health related experiences, service work, and research in preparation for applying to programs.

The director of the UCR Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC) provides vision and direction for health professions advising at UCR and is responsible for the management and supervision of this Center serving approximately 5,000 students annually through workshops, pre-health peer mentors, guest speaker programs, and other events and activities that support pre-health professions students. The director also oversees individual health professions advising of over 1,000 students annually, including oversight and on-going implementation of the interactive health professions advising electronic portfolio system AdviseStream.

The HPAC director develops and manages program budgets in consultation with the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the UCR School of Medicine and supervises two staff (health professions advisor and advisor/coordinator), two interns, and 35-40 undergraduate students selected to be peer mentors. The director is responsible for evaluating program effectiveness for continuous improvement and serves as a recognized campus resource for health professions advising.

Minimum Requirements

1. B.A./B.S. degree and a minimum of five years progressive experience in a related field
2. Minimum three years health professions advising experience
3. Demonstrated experience with student academic program administration in a research university setting
4. Demonstrated experience with the admissions process for professional schools (e.g., medical, veterinary, pharmacy, dental, etc.) and knowledge of health professions centralized application services
5. Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of student development, student academic support, and academic and curriculum requirements to help students achieve academic success
6. Demonstrated skill in preparing comprehensive and in-depth analysis of complex, sensitive, and multi-faceted issues, particularly under tight time constraints
7. Demonstrated skill to write reports on program performance using data generated by program evaluations and/or software applications
8. Demonstrated skill to write professional analytical and narrative reports on program performance using data generated by program evaluations and/or software applications
9. Demonstrated expertise using software applications, such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
10. Demonstrated skill to independently compose letters, memos, reports, and other written communication materials for a variety of audiences, using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills.
11. Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) to effectively and professionally communicate using tact and diplomacy with internal and external campus community
12. Demonstrated skill in making oral and written presentations through various media formats to multiple audiences (students, faculty, staff, public audiences)
13. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, economic and educational backgrounds, exercising patience, diplomacy, and flexibility
14. Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with academic and student services partners
15. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
16. Knowledge of FERPA regulations and restrictions
17. Demonstrated effective leadership and supervisory skills, including recruiting, hiring, training, developing, supervising, and evaluating the performance of a diverse staff.
18. Hired candidate must successfully complete a background check through the Department of Justice.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Education and/or experience equivalent to a Master's Degree in a related field
2. Demonstrated experience working with at-risk students and developing programs to improve their academic success
3. Five years of experience in health professions advising
4. Demonstrated experience with UC policies and procedures and with UC web-based Student Academic Advising System (SAAS)
5. Knowledge of UC policies and procedures governing student academic services and academic affairs administration
6. Familiarity with pre-health professional organizations (e.g. NAAHP, NACADA etc.)
