Assistant Director for Academic Partnership Programs

Position Information

The Academic Resource Center Assistant Director for Academic Partnership Programs manages overall coordination and operation of the Academic Partnership Programs unit, which specializes in academic support programs that are driven by partnerships with faculty and academic units to facilitate student success. The Assistant Director provides leadership, planning and supervision for the following campus-wide programs: Early Assist, Summer Bridge, Math Preparation Programs (Math Advisory Exam and Intermediate Algebra Workshop), Upper Division and Graduate Student Support Programs (Standardized Examination Preparation Workshops), and Writing Support Programs. The incumbent directly supervises 3-4 FTE staff (level 2 & 3 SAO and SAO Supervisors) and indirectly supervises 10-12 full-time, contract, and part-time employees; managing an annual operating budget of approximately $1M. The Assistant Director may represent the Director in meetings with faculty, administration, and student leadership. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of the Academic Resource Center.

The UCR Academic Resource Center provides student academic support programs and services including supplemental instruction, tutoring assistance, peer mentorship, study skills instruction, early assist, math placement and instruction, summer bridge, and intervention programs for all students, including students at-risk or in academic difficulty. The department has 20 FTE professional staff and over 200 part-time student employees annually.

Minimum Requirements

Master's Degree from an accredited institution and five or more years of professional level or advanced professional level experience in higher education with demonstrated progressively responsible experience in student academic support services.

Demonstrated management experience, including: 1) ability to recruit, train, supervise, assign and delegate workflow, and evaluate full time and student staff; and 2) demonstrated success in managing budgets of similar size.

Experience pursuing an extended research project using quantitative analytical tools in an academic environment.

Demonstrated skill in developing a vision or image of how a system or process should operate under ideal circumstances, assembling multiple divergent stakeholders to contribute toward successful implementation, and inviting feedback and continued cooperation in order to solve problems.

Experience working with a diverse student population on a four-year campus and demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of first generation and low income students at a large public research university.

Excellent communication skills to effectively and professionally communicate using tact and diplomacy with university partners and external community, verbally and in writing.

Experience establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, and student organizations.

Skill in creating and maintaining a working team within an environment governed by multiple stakeholders and changing institutional priorities.

Skill in the use of computers, including Microsoft Office Suite, to write documents, manage spreadsheets and databases, communicate, and research issues pertinent to student success.

Demonstrated ability to supervise academic, administrative support, and student staff in a higher education environment under conditions governed by collective bargaining.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of and expertise the needs of racially and ethnically diverse, first generation, and low income students at a large public research university.

Skill in analyzing information, problems, situations, practices, or procedures to identify relevant concerns, identify patterns or tendencies, formulate logical and objective conclusions, and make strategic recommendations.

Skill in using quantitative data, especially in the area of program evaluation, to analyze program and participant success, make recommendations, and develop subsequent program evaluations.

Experience teaching in a college or university setting with emphasis teaching writing intensive subjects.

Knowledge of UC/UCR policies and procedures governing student academic services and academic affairs administration, and UC/UCR policies and procedures concerning student academic progress towards a degree.

Knowledge of Student Academic Support tracking software (e.g., AccuTrack or Tutor Track).
