Position Information

The Bourns College of Engineering is looking for a Student Affairs Academic Advisor to join our advising office. This position is a great opportunity to grow within our college and begin on a career track of assisting our students. Under the general direction of the Student Affairs Manager for the Bourns College of Engineering (BCoE), the Academic Advisor I or II (D.O.Q) position supports the BCoE and its departments in guiding students toward higher levels of academic success. The Academic Advisor fulfills this responsibility by mentoring and advising students on academic and career matters to encourage professional development and enhance pursuit of academic goals.

Academic Advisors assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans; promote student intellectual and personal development; discuss and clarify educational, career and life goals; help students to acquire relevant information and services; interpret institutional, general education, and major requirements; evaluate and monitor student academic progress, course choice, and class schedule in context of student's life and career goals.

Academic advisors engage in the evaluation of student diagnostic exams related to learning styles, career goals and academic stressors; partner with campus student support centers regarding internships and supplemental instruction; analyze student information system data to better understand the academic challenges faced by their particular student populations.

Academic Advisors perform advising duties that are based on theories and knowledge of teaching, learning and human development, reflect developmental and demographic profiles of the student population, and respond to the needs of individuals, special populations, and communities.

The successful Academic Advisor I candidate must demonstrate potential to effectively advise students from different majors and develop program and/or resources to support student success. The successful candidate will bring to the position a sense of fresh ideas, creative approaches and ability to execute.

The successful Academic Advisor II candidate must demonstrate skill in effectively advising a caseload of current students from a variety of majors. The candidate must also demonstrate skill in developing services which support student success.

Minimum Requirements

Academic Advisor I minimum requirements:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and academic advising or related experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Demonstrate knowledge, skill and ability to effectively advise students, develop programming and resources to support their success.

Demonstrate interpersonal skill to build rapport and openness with students to encourage effective decision making and accountability.

Ability to adapt and exercise role flexibility.

Ability to multi-task and execute responsibilities with quality and efficiency.

Demonstrate direct or transferal skill at analyzing, interpreting and enforcing academic policies and practice.

Ability to work independently and following through on assignments.

Ability to tactfully interact and communicate, with students, faculty, staff and others, both orally and in writing.

Ability to accurately document advising notes, information required by campus entities, etc.

Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers in a team environment.

Ability to effectively use computer, software and systems relevant to advising function.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

Ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing.

Skill in setting priorities that accurately reflects the relative importance of job responsibilities.

Hired applicant must be able to successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice.

Academic Advisor II minimum requirements-In addition to all of the above requirements:

Master's degree and 2 - 3 years of academic advising or related experience; or equivalent combination of education & experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Ability to work independently while maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers in a team environment. Strong following through on assignments with general direction.

Ability to prioritize relative importance of responsibilities, multi-task, adapt, and execute with quality and efficiency.

Demonstrated strong communication skills including writing and speaking with clarity to individuals and in groups.

Demonstrated strong relational skills, including the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when communicating with campus and community representatives, institutions, parents and students.

Skill in effectively analyzing and interpreting academic policies, practices and guidelines as they pertain to degree programs.

Preferred Qualifications

Academic Advisor I preferred qualifications:
Knowledge of the applicable University of California policies governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position.

Demonstrated experience with SIS+ or information system that is commonplace at research-based universities.

Degree or advising experience in a STEM field, or strong working knowledge about preparation for STEM careers.

Academic Advisor II Preferred qualifications in addition to everything above:

Advising background in engineering or science.

Knowledge about issues and challenges faced by students preparing for engineering degree programs.

Knowledge about engineering fields, career preparation and opportunities from a practitioner's perspective.

Knowledge of Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Familiarity with degree requirements for each major offered by the College.
