Under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant, the Sergeant is responsible for the supervision of Patrol Officers while maintaining the chain of command within the department. The Sergeant directs law enforcement operations in the field; manages the day to day activities of sworn police officers to ensure the adherence to policies and procedures, regulations, orders and laws; and provides leadership and supervision of a unit within the department by enforcing regulations and policies for assigned personnel. The Sergeant also inspects the work of subordinates, provides performance coaching and feedback during performance evaluations; implements training to meet professional development needs; and takes corrective action when necessary to protect the welfare of the employee, integrity of the department, and safety of the community. In the absence of a ranking officer, the Sergeant also assumes leadership command of the department, and performs patrol and collateral duties as required.

Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience: Candidates must be a non-probationary police officer and hold at minimum a Basic POST certificate
Knowledge of:
Current California police practices, protocols and procedures and the workings of the California criminal justice system
Local, state and federal laws applicable to the police function generally, and to the University of California police function specifically
Protocols for conducting both simple and complex crime scene investigations
Employee relations and other development and disciplinary practices
Demonstrated skill:
Composing, editing, and distributing correspondence, reports and other documents using business software
Delivering professional presentations
Demonstrated ability to:
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with co-workers and customers, including difficult or angry people
Take command in emergency situations, while maintaining professionalism at all times
Work effectively and cooperatively with members of the campus community, allied agencies and the public
Accept instruction and direction from supervisors and work under general supervision, in an organized and self-regulating manner
Work well with citizens, peers, allied agencies, and management
Work independently, exercise sound judgment and make effective decisions
Model professional ethics, both on and off-duty
Model and promote the University's principles of community and commitment to diversity and inclusion
All candidates must possess a valid California driver's license and be able to meet California POST background, medical, and psychological standards
Knowledge of:

Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Higher ranking sworn classification above the Officer level or three or more years of sworn police service with UCPD, along with an Intermediate POST certificate (incentive pay of $225/month)
Possession of a four-year college degree
Prior supervisory experience
Possession of a POST Advanced and/or Supervisory Certificate (incentive pay of $325/month)
Experience managing personnel in a collective bargaining environment
Experience working in university or college law enforcement
Current employment as a California Peace Officer
Knowledge and Understanding of:
Current and effective supervisory and management principles
Current and effective community policing/problem-oriented policing practices
The principles of developing employees and building effective work teams
The University community, including its organizational structure, various constituencies and the dynamics of its diversity of people, ideas, organizations, and interests
Community oriented policing (COP) in a California law enforcement agency that bases ALL of its services on the COP model
