Position Information

Under the general direction of the Student Academic Affairs office and the Department Financial & Administrative Officer, the successful candidate is responsible for all aspects of the undergraduate student affairs functions of the Departments of Economics and Political Sciences. The position provides academic advising to students seeking readmission to the College, primarily those students enrolled through UCR Extension Concurrent Enrollment. Under closer supervision, uses principles of developmental academic advising and knowledge of teaching and learning theory to promote academic, career and life goals in an effort to support student retention, timeliness to degree, academic success, as well as intellectual and personal development. Researches, interprets, applies and clarifies University policy in this area and exercises independent judgment in day-to-day student affairs and advising matters.

Minimum Requirements

1. Bachelor's degree and academic advising experience.
2. Ability to extract, compile, analyze, and present pertinent data effectively.
3. Demonstrated experience with online Student Information Systems.
4. Understanding and knowledge of teaching, learning, and human development theories.
5. Knowledge of characteristics of university students and an understanding of multicultural differences
6. Ability to relate to individuals and groups of students using communication, counseling, and problem-solving skills.
7. Ability to work with students in a wide range of majors.
8. Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction.
9. Ability to effectively, professionally, and tactfully interact and communicate, both orally and in writing, with students, faculty, staff and visitors. Skill in independently composing letters, memos, reports, and other written communication materials using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills.
10. Skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail. Skill in organizing tasks, documents and materials with efficiency and accuracy.
11. Demonstrated computer proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) or other equivalent software, the internet, e-mail messaging, and web-based software applications.
12.Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
13. Advanced computer knowledge with the ability to understand and learn new on-line programs.
14. Knowledge of the applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position including the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
15. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions.
16. Skill in setting priorities that accurately reflects the relative importance of job responsibilities.
17. Experience working with students in a university setting.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Knowledge of the applicable University of California policies governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position.
2. Ability to extract, compile, analyze, and present pertinent data effectively.
