Maintenance B-Supervisor Steam Operations

Position Information

University of California, Riverside has an immediate need for a qualified Steam Plant Operations Supervisor (Maintenance B-Supervisor). The Steam Plant Operations Supervisor provides oversight and supervision in the operation, maintenance, repair and upkeep of the campus centralized steam, chilled water, vacuum and compressed air systems. In addition, the Steam Plant Operations Supervisor provides technical, administrative and coordination support by performing energy/water and utility management/infra-structure related project tasks and other campus Strategic Resource Management Plan (SRMO) related duties as required. Supervises Steam Plant Maintenance Operators, oversees work performed, makes work assignments, ensures staffing coverage, ensures technical skills competencies, conducts performance appraisals, employee counseling and discipline; recruits and hires steam plant personnel. Oversees the ongoing maintenance and repair of boiler and steam machinery and equipment. Ensures maintenance and operations efficiencies of boiler/steam support systems (selective catalytic NOX (nitrous oxide) reduction (SCR) system; compressed air, vacuum, feed water, condensate, cooling water and chemical treatment). Monitors operating efficiency and pollutant levels to comply with air quality regulations. Oversees the overall function and operation of Steam Plant equipment including air and vacuum systems, control systems, propane storage, transfer and gasification systems, and Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system to meet demand and efficiency. Ensures preventive maintenance on equipment and systems is performed as required. Maintains work order records and computer logs. Responds to emergency calls as necessary. Performs emergency repairs as required. Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate will have at least five (5) years of experience as a stationery engineer, journey-level pipe-fitter, steam plant operator, or boiler/chiller operator/technician, or an equivalent number of years of education, training and experience. The successful candidate will also have an additional five years' experience in a supervisory capacity.

Knowledge of State and Federal centralized steam and chilled water system related legal codes is required as is knowledge of industrial health and safety standards as they apply to boilers and chillers and related systems operations. Knowledge of all aspects of centralized steam, chilled water, vacuum and compressed air systems diagnosis, maintenance, operation, calibration and repair. Knowledge of preventive maintenance (PM) program design and implementation as well as the ability to effectively manage a complex PM system. Knowledge of centralized steam, chilled water, vacuum and compressed air engineering design standards and the ability to generate designs and specifications. Knowledge and ability to make recommendations as to mechanical system energy use and maintenance optimization.

Experience in operation and maintenance of high pressure water tube boilers, large tonnage centrifugal chillers, multistage centrifugal pumps, compressors, vacuum pumps, and cooling towers. Experience using basic electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. Experience with operating and maintaining digital control energy management and industrial heating and cooling control systems. Experience with industrial cleaning and surface preparation procedures and equipment, and their use. Experience in accurately entering and requesting data using a computer terminal. Experience with computers using programs such as web-based systems, databases, and Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel). Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively using the English language. Ability to write legibly and accurately record and communicate operating data and information. Ability to collaboratively resolve issues; provide exceptional customer service, and work effectively as part of a team. Skill in performing basic arithmetic calculations, such as adding and subtracting whole numbers, decimals, and fractions as necessary to perform job duties. Skill in proper application of precision measuring and calibration equipment, and knowledge of their application to electronic instrumentation.

Possess a valid California Driver's License and the ability to safely operate a standard or automatic transmission 1/2 ton pickup truck. Physical ability to move and lift boxes weighing up to 50 lbs from the floor to a 4 foot high shelf. Physical ability to safely move drums of chemicals weighing up to 600 lbs using a hand drum dolly. Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, stretch, reach over shoulder height. Physical ability to work from ladders and scaffolding, and inside confined spaces such as boilers, tanks and receivers. Physical ability to withstand frequent exposure to extreme temperature conditions of up to 125 degrees F (boiler room, steam pits, outdoor weather, etc.); hazardous chemicals and fumes. Physical ability to work in an area where noise levels exceed 90dB and wear ear protection or other protective equipment. Must successfully complete a pre-employment, post-offer physical/drug screen and background check.

Preferred Qualifications

Basic First Aid and CPR Certification.
Stationary Engineer's License or license eligible.
Previous steam operations experience in a higher education environment, military/industrial energy operation environment, or other large capacity, public steam/energy operations.
