Position Information

The University of California, Riverside has an excellent opportunity available for an Environmental Programs Specialist (EHS 1). The Environmental Programs Specialist performs visual and hands-on inspections verifying chemical and controlled substance inventory. Inspects labs and storage areas to ensure accuracy and compliance with governmental regulations and campus policy. Verifies chemical inventories, storage and use areas, and authorized staff. Conducts or participates in remote site inspections and assessments for regulatory applicability, and participates in program implementation where needed to achieve compliance. Moves hazardous chemical, biological and radioactive waste from the accumulation areas on campus to the central 90-day storage area. Segregates and packages waste for transportation. Conducts or participates in safe handling of hazardous waste for storage and shipment. The Environmental Programs Specialist prepares documentation related to tracking of corrective actions and trends in compliance audit results and performance. Conducts follow-up activities, such as documenting, tracking, training, educating, labeling, storing, and purging of controlled materials and substances in support of established corrective action implementation. Conducts or participates in storm water public outreach and education activities. Performs other duties as requested.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, chemistry, biology or closely related science and three years of practical work experience with chemical and controlled substance reporting, documenting, tracking and monitoring inventories; and/or experience working in Environmental Health & Safety Programs, or an equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Demonstrated experience with hazardous waste and knowledge of the associated regulatory requirements for hazardous waste management. Knowledge of chemical compatibilities and hazard classifications and the ability to interpret safety data sheets. Skill in collecting, compiling, documenting and analyzing chemical inventory and controlled substances. Demonstrated experience with chemical inventory and controlled substances and knowledge of the associated regulatory requirements for each. Comprehensive knowledge of Homeland Security controls, DEA requirements, OSHA-Cal/OSHA, and other state and federal regulations, environmental requirements for air, storm water, wastewater, and hazardous waste management.

Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility to interact and maintain working relationships with University administration, faculty and departments, private industry representatives, and governmental agencies, including skills to clearly communicate information to a broad variety of people in written form, in person, and on the telephone. Proven ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated skill in public speaking and comfort in representing the university and the department to the community and general public.

Skill in working independently and effectively, following through on assignments with minimal direction and a fluctuating workload with a demonstrated ability to collect, compile and extract data, organize, and manipulate data from multiple sources, and identify problems and trends, recommend action to be taken, and implement necessary solutions, policies and procedures. Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), online and web-based tracking systems, and other EH&S software (e.g., GPS/GIS systems, chemical inventory management, SDS management, etc.).

Ability to work in office, academic, research laboratory environments. Frequent walking, standing, sitting, fine-finger dexterity to manipulate computer, operate and calibrate equipment; occasional bending and stooping, squatting, pushing/pulling, lifting items of up to 50 lbs intermittently. Ability to perform mechanical and other tasks requiring manual dexterity; e.g., drive forklift and manipulate pallets; maneuver full 55 gallon barrels with the aid of standard handling equipment. Ability to safely drive a box truck around campus for hazardous waste pick-ups. Ability to move heavy and bulky materials; carry emergency gear, climb ladders, and wear air-purifying respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus in toxic stressful atmospheres. Ability to safely wear and work in personal protective equipment including respirator and SCBA. Ability to participate in Emergency Response Team activities and respond to campus emergencies as necessary.

Must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and background check through the FBI and Department of Justice. California driver's license; participation in the campus DMV Pull Notice Program.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred certifications: Forklift certified, 40-hour HAZWOPER certified and/or CPR/First Aid certified
