Position Information
The University of California, Riverside has an excellent opportunity for a Laboratory Safety Monitoring Specialist. The EHS Lab Safety/Monitoring Specialist will perform industrial hygiene exposure monitoring, in support of the EHS III-Laboratory Compliance Officer, developing exposure monitoring plans and projects costs, interacting with laboratory departments and the Campus Industrial Hygienist. Under the direction of the EHS III- Laboratory Compliance Officer, this position will serve as a point of contact between EH&S and the laboratory personnel to address common problems regarding hazard evaluations and standard operating procedure (SOP) development.
Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or closely related field, and a minimum of one year of recent chemical laboratory experience; or in research laboratory safety, medical/hospital, public or occupational health/safety environments; or an equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
Demonstrated knowledge of standard laboratory procedures. Demonstrated knowledge in laboratory safety processes, including standard operating procedure (SOP) development and hazard evaluation. Knowledge of occupational regulations and environmental requirements for air, hazard communication, water, waste and tank management. Demonstrated knowledge of key laboratory health and safety issues in a research setting and the ability to develop solutions and procedures. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement EHS compliance, recording and reporting plans. Experience in developing and using metrics to measure and improve processes and services. Knowledge of chemical compatibilities and hazard classifications and the ability to interpret safety data sheets. Knowledge of and skill in using chemical safety compliance laboratory procedures, equipment and instrumentation including proper personal protective equipment, safe handling equipment, and common laboratory analytical devices and tools. Skill in investigating, documenting and analyzing laboratory near-miss incidents and accidents.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility to interact and maintain working relationships with University administration, faculty and departments, private industry representatives, and governmental agencies, including skills to clearly communicate information to a broad variety of people in written form, in person, and on the telephone. Proven ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated skill in public speaking and comfort in representing the university and the department to the community and general public. Skill in working independently and effectively, following through on assignments with minimal direction and a fluctuating workload with a demonstrated ability to collect, compile and extract data, organize, and manipulate data from multiple sources, and to use appropriate analytical and statistical procedures needed to identify problems and trends, recommend action to be taken, and implement necessary solutions, policies and procedures.
Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), online and web-based tracking systems, and other EH&S software (e.g., chemical inventory management, SDS management, etc.).
Ability to work in office, academic, research laboratory environments. Frequent walking, standing, sitting, fine-finger dexterity to manipulate computer, operate and calibrate equipment; occasional bending and stooping, squatting, pushing/pulling, lifting items of up to 50lbs intermittently. Ability to participate in Emergency Response Team activities. Ability to move heavy and bulky materials; carry emergency gear, climb ladders, and wear air-purifying respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus in toxic stressful atmospheres. Ability to pass a physical examination for emergency response team and safely w ear and work in personal protective equipment including respirator and SCBA.
California driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in biochemistry/chemistry or physical science and four years of chemical laboratory experience.
