Position Information

The UCR School of Medicine at the University of California, Riverside is seeking an experienced Grant & Technical Writer. The UCR School of Medicine is committed to training a diverse physician workforce for the rapidly growing and dynamic Inland Southern California region and to developing research and health care delivery innovations that improve the health of medically underserved populations. Under the general supervision of the Director of the School of Medicine (SOM) Center for Healthy Communities (CHC) and the SOM Manager of Contract & Grant Operations, the Grant and Technical Writer will draft and edit content for extramural funding proposals, grant progress reports, letters of intent and concept papers on behalf of the UCR School of Medicine. Additionally, the incumbent will manage a library of scholarly references for the CHC and provide editing and other support to CHC faculty writing scholarly papers. This position will be housed entirely within the SOM, with 50% of time devoted to the CHC and 50% to the Strategic Initiatives Unit. This is a one-year contract position, with the possibility of extending beyond one year or converting to a career position.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, marketing, or a related field, and at least five years of experience in grant and/or technical writing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of the scholarly publishing process, with experience using software tools to organize and manage references and bibliographies, such as EndNote or RefWorks.

Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite to create technical and sophisticated written communication materials.

Broad experience producing grant proposal narratives for a variety of funders, including, for example, the National Institutes of Health, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and philanthropic foundations.

Demonstrated skill in working with minimal direct supervision to produce high-quality, timely and factual work products.

Ability to work under tight and occasionally competing deadlines, and to manage priorities in a fluid environment.

Expert skills in grammar, copyediting, and organizing complex and lengthy documents.

Experience working in an academic research environment.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with diverse internal academic stakeholders and external community representatives.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in English, journalism, marketing, or fields related to the job functions.

Familiarity with software tools, such as Illustrator and Photoshop, for creating aesthetically pleasing graphic content that communicates complicated concepts in a concise manner.
