Position Information

The University of California, Riverside Library welcomes applicants for the position of Acquisitions Assistant, to perform the tasks involved in ordering and receiving library resources (primarily books and serials in print and digital formats), including some cataloging on receipt, as a member of the Acquisitions unit,. We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented individual, who can contribute effectively and independently to fast-paced work in a rapidly-changing team environment.

Successful applicant must pass a background check.

Minimum Requirements

Understanding of library operations and procedures, particularly acquisitions and technical services, and experience using an integrated library system.

Knowledge of serial, standing order, and monographic materials, including format, identification, publishers, and other characteristics.

Knowledge of basic cataloging rules and standards (including RDA, AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification, and MARC21) and cataloging tools (including RDA Toolkit, Cataloger Desktop, Classification Web, and OCLC).

Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including colleagues, administrators, and students.

Ability to operate a personal computer/workstation, including effective use of Microsoft Office software (especially MS Word and MS Excel) and network applications such as electronic mail, internet browsers, websites, etc.

Skill in performing under conditions of frequent interruptions and following through on assignments with minimal supervision, including the ability to set priorities to accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.

Accuracy and attention to detail in following guidelines and procedures, completing forms, entering data, etc.

Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to compose correspondence (in appropriate, grammatical standard English) with vendors and others.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor degree or equivalent.

Experience with the Millennium integrated library system, with knowledge of acquisitions and/or serials modules.

Experience in approving invoices, initiating library subscriptions, renewals, cancellations, placing firm orders, processing book and serial receipts, cataloging upon receipt.

Thorough understanding of MARC format for bibliographic records, item records, and serial check-in records.

Creative problem-solving skills, and flexibility to adapt to a changing work environment, including changes in guidelines and workflow.
