Position Information

Under the general direction of the Director, the incumbent is responsible for recruiting, advising, and supporting undergraduate students to participate in study abroad programs, including UC Education Abroad Program (UC EAP), UC Riverside Summer Study Abroad, and third-party programs (Opportunities Abroad Program). In particular, incumbent will provide expertise on UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) student support services, such as helping students identify appropriate UC EAP programs based on their interests and/or areas of study, navigate financial aid policies and procedures, and apply for internal and extramural scholarships. In addition, the incumbent will collaborate with Study Abroad staff to lead information sessions, provide pre-departure and re-entry activities for UCR students, support during crisis situations, and event planning and management (e.g., Fall and Winter Worldfest, International Education Week).

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree, with 2-3 years of demonstrated progressively responsible study abroad program coordination or advising experience in a university setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated skill in event management, publicity, evaluation, and budgeting. Demonstrated ability to successfully advise students on selection of appropriate study abroad program options, utilizing appropriate networks and resources.

Demonstrated ability to provide crisis management and intervention in an international context, to problem-solve, and to offer alternatives towards conflict resolution. Knowledge about current safety, security and health issues and regulations as they affect students abroad. Experience working with health care professionals in travel clinics.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Skill in evaluating and analyzing complex concepts or knowledge of past discrepancies, trends, and relationships, and applying the concepts appropriately. Skill in analyzing policy issues, UC policy and procedures, and other directives and form solid recommendations. Skill in analyzing information, problems, situations, practices, or procedures to identify relevant concerns, identify patterns or tendencies, formulate logical and objective conclusions.

Oral and Written Communication Skills - Skill in making oral and written presentations through various media formats to colleagues or subordinates to provide information, instructions, or explain subjects of interest. Skill in speaking to public audiences through professional oral presentations. Skill to independently compose letters, memos, reports, and other written communication materials, for a variety of audiences, using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Interpersonal Skills: Skill in working as part of a team and collaborating with colleagues. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships. Ability to invite information, constructive criticism, and cooperation from others. Skill in advising students.

Knowledge of Applicable Guidelines and Policies: Knowledge of the applicable federal, state, and UC regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the job, e.g., Financial Aid, FERPA.

PC Skills - Advanced: Skill in creating and editing documents in word processing applications using moderately advanced features. Skill in creating spreadsheets and reports using Word, Access, Excel, FileMaker Pro, or other software application. Skill in updating web sites.

Self-Management Skills: Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction.

Supervisory Experience: Experience in a supervisory role responsible for hiring, evaluating, directing, disciplining, and complaint resolution of student volunteers and workers.

Preferred Qualifications

1-2 years of experience living, working, or studying abroad.

Affiliation with NAFSA: Association of International Educators, The Forum on Study Abroad, or other international education or cultural groups.

Demonstrated experience with online Student Information System (SIS+).

Knowledge of the applicable UC policies and procedures governing areas related to the responsibilities of the job.

Demonstrated experience with MyEAP.
