Access Services Assistant, Collection Maintenance

Position Information

Under the general supervision of the Head of Collection Maintenance, the incumbent in this position is responsible for maintaining the workflow for the Google Books and Federal Document archive projects. This includes monitoring student hours and work to ensure items are correctly prepared for the monthly shipments, create or update item records and add bar codes as needed, sear for items students could not locate, and update and maintain all spreadsheets, lists and documentation related to the projects. The incumbent performs work independently and uses paraprofessional and advanced operational and technical skills involving a general knowledge of library practices and procedures. The incumbent also assists in training, scheduling and evaluating student assistants; assists in directing student assistants in maintaining an efficient workflow for the Collection Maintenance Unit.

Must be able to work M-F 9 am-6 pm (or 9:30 am-6 pm). Must be able to work flexible hours for staffing in backup situations - days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

This position is not an ongoing position, in that it is established and funded for 18 months or less due to funding.

Minimum Requirements

Experience in a computer-reliant work environment and the ability to learn specialized software.

Demonstrated experience using an integrated library system.

Experience updating bibliographic and item records and creating item records in an ILS.

Demonstrated experience using the Library of Congress classification system.

Knowledge of stacks maintenance procedures and practices.

Demonstrated skill in organizing, monitoring, and setting priorities for a heavy workload with multiple tasks and competing deadlines.

Skill to delegate work.

Communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work cooperatively with library staff, student assistants, and patrons with diverse backgrounds.

Skill in using tact and diplomacy in dealing with a wide variety of people and ability to remain calm under pressure.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills sufficient to communicate effectively in person, via email, and over the telephone.

Typing skills sufficient to enter data accurately.

Demonstrated experience using spreadsheet, word processing, and database programs. Demonstrated ability to export data, manipulate, and use formulas in Excel spreadsheets.

Math skills sufficient to accurately gather and compile statistics.

Ability to understand, follow and execute detailed instructions.

Must be able to bend, stoop, lift, and push loaded book trucks and Google carts weighing up to approximately 250 lbs.

Must be able to clear a background investigation as required by state law and University regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Academic Library experience.

Previous experience training, guiding, directing and reviewing the work of student employees

Experience using the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) classification system.

Demonstrated success working in a collaborative, team-based work environment.

Previous experience working in a Circulation/Reserves unit.
