Position Information

ARTSblock is the California Museum of Photography (CMP) and the Culver Center of the Arts, which also houses the Sweeney Art Gallery. The California Museum of Photography has more than 500,000 photographs, photographic artifacts, and apparatus. This collection serves to promote understanding of photography and visual media by providing access and context to one of the largest and most comprehensive photographic resources in America. The CMP contains four interlinked collections: the Bingham Technology Collection, the Keystone-Mast Collection, the University Print Collection, and the Study Center Library Collection. Of these, the Bingham Technology Collection holds over 10,000 items, making it the second largest camera collection in America, while the Keystone-Mast Collection is the world's largest stereographic collection of over 400,000 original stereoscopic prints and original glass negatives. Collection projects have regularly been funded by the NEA, NEH, corporations, and foundations.

Reporting to the Senior Curator at the California Museum of Photography, and working collaboratively with all ARTSblock curators, exhibition design team, and the Director of Museum Education & Outreach, the Exhibition Manager will conceptualize, develop, research, and organize small-scale exhibitions. This person will work closely with the curatorial team on the development and execution of larger exhibitions and projects. The Exhibition Manager will coordinate incoming traveling exhibitions, support the development of exhibition-related publications such as brochures and catalogues, and draft and coordinate exhibition tour proposal materials. The Exhibition Manager will represent ARTSblock to the outside community, in particular in conversation with artists, galleries, and donors, and will interact frequently with visitors, scholars, and students, including giving exhibition tours and public talks.

Minimum Requirements

(1) Bachelor's degree in a related area and one (1) year of experience in curatorial work, or an equivalent combination of experience in managing arts programming.
Excellent skills in curatorial program support
Knowledge of high caliber art museum operations, standards, and procedures.
Working knowledge of the art market, galleries, and museums.
Proven skills and abilities in producing exhibitions and related activities that are highly organized, efficient, and professional.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to write correspondence, reports, and publishable materials.
Proven curatorial research skills.
Experience managing image rights.
Exceptional organizational skills.
Ability to work independently or as part of a team on research, exhibitions, and publications.
Demonstrated ability to create effective relationships, influence, and collaborate internally and externally at all organizational levels.
Ability to discreetly and tactfully recognize and address sensitive or confidential information.
Ability to delegate laterally combined with willingness to work in a "hands on" manner and as part of a team.
Ability to prioritize and adjust heavy workload, manage a variety of tasks, and meet various deadlines with changing priorities, frequent interruptions, and conflicting deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

(1) Bachelor's degree in a related area and three (3) years of experience in curatorial work preferred.
Five or more (5+) years of experience and excellent skills in curatorial (or related field) program support.
Thorough knowledge of contemporary art with emphasis on photography.
Prior museum experience working with photography.
Knowledge of collections management best practices.
Publications management experience.
Strong editorial skills.
Strong budget and project management skills.
Proven supervisory and leadership skills; a solutions-oriented, diplomatic problem solver and true team player.
Experience with carpentry, knowledge of materials, processes, equipment, and safety.
Proficiency with design software such as InDesign, CAD, or SketchUp.
