Access Services Assistant, Collection Maintenance

Position Information

Under the general supervision of the Head of Collection Maintenance, the incumbent in this position is responsible for searching for materials patrons are unable to locate, advising them of search results, and referring them to other library departments when appropriate; performs work independently and uses paraprofessional and advanced operational and technical skills involving a general knowledge of library practices and procedures; assists in hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating student assistants; assists in directing student assistants in maintaining an efficient workflow for the Collection Maintenance Unit; responsible for providing assistance and administering public service functions and transactions to a wide variety of patrons at the Circulation/Reserves Desk on a regular basis.

The incumbent's primary responsibilities and tasks will be at the Rivera Library, but may be assigned hours in Access Services at the Orbach Library.

Minimum Requirements

Experience in a computer-reliant work environment and the ability to learn specialized software.

Demonstrated experience using an integrated management library system such as Ex Libris or similar.

Demonstrated skill in organizing, monitoring, and setting priorities for a heavy workload with multiple tasks and competing deadlines.

Skill to train, guide, direct, and review the work of student assistants.

Skill to delegate work.

Experience working with the public in a service-oriented environment.

Communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work cooperatively with library staff, student assistants, and patrons with diverse backgrounds.

Skill in using tact and diplomacy in dealing with a wide variety of people and ability to remain calm under pressure.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills sufficient to communicate effectively in person, via email, over the telephone.

Typing skills sufficient to enter data accurately.

Ability to understand, follow and execute detailed instructions.

Ability to use judgment in applying appropriate guidelines to specific tasks and to make decisions.

Math skills sufficient to accurately gather and compile statistics.

Must be able to bend, stoop, lift, and push loaded book trucks weighing up to approximately 250 lbs.

Experience handling safety and emergency situations.

Must be able to work Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.

Must be able to work flexible hours for staffing in backup situations - days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Hours may vary from quarter to quarter.

Must be able to clear a background investigation as required by state law and University regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

Academic Library experience.

Knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system.

Knowledge of the Superintendent of Documents (SUDocs) classification system.

Knowledge of stacks maintenance procedures and practices.

Demonstrated experience using spreadsheet, word processing and database programs.

Demonstrated ability to export data.

Demonstrated success working in a collaborative, team-based work environment.

Previous experience working in a Circulation/Reserves unit.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
