Position Information

UC Riverside’s Housing, Dining, and Hospitality Services is looking for a Director to open and manage our newly renovated Barn and our Retail Dining Operations. If you have extensive experience with multi-unit dining operations, knowledge of live entertainment, and restaurant and bars, this may be the great next position for your career. Those of you with Food and Beverage Director and Bar Director experience, especially if you have opened a new facility, should definitely read further.

As the new Director of the Barn and Retail Dining, you will report to the Executive Director and be an integral member of our management team responsible for quality leadership, services, and programming. You will direct, manage, and coordinate the newly remodeled Barn complex and the seven-day operations of the retail portion of the department. You will directly and indirectly supervise over 200 varied staff, including student, limited, and career employees, in a union environment, while also serving as the point of contact for third party tenant and corporate contracts. Additionally, you will be directly responsible for operational budgets of approximately $19 million while ensuring expenses are established and appropriately budgeted with a focus on growth, menu, guest service innovation, and operational efficiencies.

As the Director, the operations under your purview will include the Barn Restaurant and the Stables Restaurant and Lounge (opening early 2020), the North District Market (opening Fall 2021), the Student Success Center Market (opening Fall 2021), Subway, Coffee Shops (Bytes, Emerbee’s, and Ivan’s), Scotty’s Convenience Stores and Campus Vending, oversight of HUB’s third party tenant contracts (MOD Pizza, Chronic Taco, Panda Express, Hibachi San, Habit, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf) and Bannockburn’s third party tenants (Getaway Café, Substation, Archetype, and Fitness United and Nutrition), and oversight of the “Talent Buyer” contract for managing the entertainment events at The Barn.

The Barn complex is the first of its kind at UCR and will serve as a destination for students, staff, and faculty alike while providing a sense of purpose, place, and community for campus constituents to come together for food, drinks, and entertainment. The Barn includes a robust entertainment and event schedule to meet fiscal goals which will be coordinated between the venue leadership team and a Talent Buyer contractor. The Barn’s $20 million renovation began in June 2018 and is expected to be complete by the end of 2019, with a grand opening of the new complex set for winter 2020. The new Barn’s capacity will be tripled and include its revamped signature restaurant with new faculty-staff lounge, a showcase music venue, and a theater.
