Position Information
Under the general direction of the Chemical Hygiene Officer/Lab Safety Supervisor, the Research Safety Specialist / Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Coordinator serves as the representative from Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) who provides technical guidance to campus research laboratories on compliance with campus safety standards, federal and state regulations. The incumbent schedules and conducts independent laboratory safety surveys and inspections to identify and evaluate a wide variety of potential hazards in the workplace; submits timely reports; conducts timely follow-up to corrective actions and recommendations until items are resolved, and assists with the development and implementation of the lab safety program according to EH&S departmental procedures. The incumbent conducts incident investigations, recommends appropriate resolutions based on root cause analysis, and compiles lessons learned from incidents. The incumbent develops technical content and delivers formal training via various media platforms. The incumbent also serves as the expert who assists, identifies, and coordinates the distribution of lab coats, safety eye-wear and other personal protective equipment to campus research laboratories and campus support staff based on risk and hazard tools. The incumbent is responsible for training researchers in safety issues related to personal protective equipment. The incumbent ensures compliance with University of California Office of the President (UCOP) PPE Policy by overseeing, monitoring and managing compliance of PPE use in all areas involving hazardous materials and campus research laboratories to ensure safe procedures are properly followed. The incumbent works directly with EH&S leadership in the development, implementation, and monitoring of an effective PPE program; anticipate PPE needs, manages and maintains inventory, develops and manages PPE compliance metrics, manages monthly billing reports and ensures the accuracy of billing through systematic and routine audits, and recommends and implements corrective actions. Collaborates with campus faculty, student and staff in the efficient and integrated delivery of PPE including training to the campus community. Also performs other lab safety tasks including, but not limited to, PPE consultations, general laboratory inspections, providing regulatory interpretation, technical advice and guidance, and addressing lab safety questions.
