Position Information

Under general supervision, provide skills necessary to support the UC Riverside R'Garden and Community Garden Projects in the department of Agricultural Operations, specifically in cultural practices in row crops, aid in land preparation, open field management, and equipment set up and adjust. Assist in pest control and tree care areas such as mechanized tree skirting, etc.

Minimum Requirements

Three years of agricultural experience with a demonstrated ability to operate light to medium and/or non- complex agricultural equipment; including mowers, sprayers, and trenchers; and the experience and knowledge to successfully perform the duties assigned to the position.

Ability to read, write and speak English; perform basic arithmetic calculations.

Under supervision prepares and applies various chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Knowledge of pesticide application and safety procedures.

Demonstrated experience and ability to operate and conduct routine maintenance on pesticide application equipment. Knowledge in safety operations and regulations.

Maintain operational records such as records for cultural care operations and materials applied to plots.

Experience/ability to work in an outside environment during inclement weather and temperature extremes (above 100 F); moving of materials up to 40 pounds daily.

Ability to pass a respirator fit test and ability to wear and use air purifying respirator during chemical applications when required by law.

Ability to obtain a Qualified Applicator Certificate within 6 months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in operating tractors with attached or towed equipment and specialized equipment, planters, bed shapers, and cultivators.

Demonstrated experience in communicating with staff and understanding basic field production objectives when performing plot work.

Forklift certified and proven ability to successfully operate a forklift.

Experience in preparing small scale production plots and applying pesticides to same plots.
