Machine Shop Manager

Position Information

Under the direction of the Department Chair, the Research and Development Engineer 3 (Machine Shop Manager) will oversee the teaching and research of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Machine Shop laboratory facility. The duties include: (1) training shop users, including faculty and students (post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate,) in the safe use of machining equipment, (2) providing engineering services to faculty and students including but not limited to the design, fabrication, and testing of scientific research apparatus, instrumentation systems, and processes and utilizing solid modeling and other computer-based engineering modeling and design programs; (3) serving as an engineering consultant to the faculty and students on matters related to the design and fabrication of such apparatus, systems, and processes: (4) fabricating and repairing teaching equipment; and (5) supervising the safe operation of a full-service Machine Shop, a facility which is critically important to the College of Engineering and its research objectives. A work sample and skill assessment will be required as part of the selection process for finalist. The budgeted hiring range for this position is $71,800 to $100,000.00

Minimum Requirements

Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
Demonstrated ability to act as an engineering design consultant with knowledge of material selection, tolerance selection, design for manufacturability/assemblability, etc. The ability to provide advice on the design of complex engineered devices including establishing design requirements.
Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.
Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain machine shop equipment.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.
Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work.
Ability to weld using TIG, MIG, oxygen-acetylene, and arc welding equipment.
Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
The ability to transform designs and concepts expressed through oral instructions, written instructions, sketches, and/or blueprints into completed projects.
Proficiency in the use of computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software such as SolidWorks, MasterCam, Surfcam, etc.
Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the safe operation of a machine shop. The ability to provide effective instruction and training in the safe and effective use of machine shop equipment.
Skill and experience in using machining equipment including, but not limited to, drill presses, band saws, mills, lathes, and surface grinders. The ability to machine parts to close tolerances. The ability to use precision measuring instruments.
Ability to lead and influence others.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing a machine shop and supervising machine shop personnel.

Experience at preparing budget estimates and maintaining operating budgets.

Experience at maintaining inventories of stocks and materials necessary to enable effective operation of a machine shop.

Experience with maintaining records in an accurate and organized manner.

Experience in a higher learning environment

Experience in a mechanical engineering department
