Associate Development Engineer

Position Information

Responsible for the supervision and management of the Physics educational operations, including instruction, teaching laboratories, lecture demonstrations, and department special events. Supervises 4.0 FTE and various student assistants. Coordinate and supervise equipment/instrument change-outs for laboratory exercises. In consultation with faculty, build equipment for new laboratory experiments and demonstrations. Assemble, test, and debug equipment prototypes. Research existing methods of performing similar experiments. Serves as Facilities Manager for department and lead contact for renovation and minor construction projects. Manage computer hardware and software needs, networking systems and provide general computing assistance for staff/technical units. The budgeted hiring range for this position is $64,400 to $93,200, depending on the selected candidate's education and experience.

Minimum Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge and skill in operating, building, and programming computers, as well as in networking and interfacing computers. Skills in using Windows based operating systems including Windows Server, and application packages such as Data Studio, LabView, and Microsoft Office.
Analytical and judgment skills needed to conduct problem identification and resolution.
Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction; skill in setting priorities that accurately reflects the relative importance of job responsibilities; skill in performing effectively under a fluctuating workload; ability to take risks and act as a catalyst for change; skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail; and, skill in organizing tasks, documents and materials with efficiency and accuracy.
Knowledge or coursework in Physics or Engineering in the following topics: Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Electronics, Thermodynamics, Optics, Nuclear Physics, and Quantum Mechanics.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
Experience with installation, modification, repair, and maintenance of equipment in a research or teaching laboratory. Proficiency in mechanical drawing principles and skills in using mechanical drawing and/or CAD software sufficient to produce professional drawings for shop personnel. Ability to design circuit diagrams.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner.
Working knowledge of the principles and methods related to the design, development and fabrication of scientific/electronic equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Working knowledge of HR policies.
Working technical skills associated with providing research support.
Proven competency in electronics with the ability to use instruments such as oscilloscopes, digital multi-meters, frequency meters, power supplies and soldering irons. Working knowledge of machine equipment such as a drill press, metal lathe, vertical mill, band saw, grinder, table saw, and hand tools (power and manual).
Experience with interpreting, applying and implementing complex policies, regulations and requirements and technical documents; and training and advising others (i.e., development techs and/or students) in the interpretation and application of complex policies, regulations and requirements. Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills.
Ability to lead and influence staff; to effectively provide direction and guidance.
Ability to organize work effectively.
Ability to prioritize work assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in an institution of higher education. Skill and knowledge of on-line applications and systems.

Competency in high-vacuum techniques and instrumentation sufficient to design and build a working system.Working technical knowledge of microwave electronics sufficient to design and build basic wave-guide assemblies, oscillators, and receivers. Knowledge of CAMAC and NIM modules and the IEEE.488.2 buss sufficient to build instrument modules and interface to a computer.
