Sr. Farm Mechanic

Position Information

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Landscape Services, the Sr. Farm Mechanic plans, organizes, and directs the operation of the grounds machinery service garage. Performs service, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of grounds equipment such as: pickups, light and heavy trucks, tractors, trailers, various farm implements, turf machines, small engines, air compressors, sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, engines, and pumps. Diagnoses and corrects mechanical malfunctions; repairs, overhauls and rebuilds gasoline, propane and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, drive trains and hydraulic, electrical, and cooling systems. Lubricates grounds machinery. Dismounts, repairs, and replaces tires. Makes sheet metal repairs by welding and brazing; operates metal lathes, drill presses, milling machines, grinders, and other shop tools. Establishes and ensures shop safety procedures are followed and maintained at all times. Sets up inspection and preventative maintenance schedules and ensures schedules are followed. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of shop activities, materials, supplies, equipment, and repairs. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates clearly and effectively with management, supervisors, staff, another university personnel. Performs other related duties as required.

Experience

Experience Requirement
4 years of experience as a farm machinery mechanic or similar mechanic, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required
Experience in rebuilding and repairing gas and diesel powered equipment, engines, and hydraulic system components. Required
Experience diagnosing mechanical malfunctions. Required
Experience using hand and power tools, grinders, lathes, jacks, hydraulic presses, pneumatic hammers and wrenches, and threaders. Required
Experience using gas and electric welders. Required

Hired candidate must successfully pass a background check through the DOJ and FBI prior to appointment start date. Required
Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination prior to appointment start date. Required
Must possess or obtain a Valid CA Driver License in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Required

Minimum Requirements

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to work effectively; following through on assignments with minimal direction and fluctuating workload.
Skill and ability to safely and appropriately use hand and power tools, grinders, lathes, jacks, hydraulic presses, pneumatic hammers and wrenches, threaders, and gas and electric welders.
Skill and ability to repair and maintain hydraulic system components.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Skill and ability to rebuild and repair diesel and gas powered equipment and engines.
Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, and provide exceptional customer service.
Ability to implement, maintain and ensures shop safety procedures at all times.
Knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected.
Knowledge of electrical circuitry, wiring diagrams, and electrical test equipment.
Ability to effectively communicate and understand safety regulations and hazards.
Knowledge and technical skills with computer programs and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) with ability to maintain documents and spreadsheets, and use email.
Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
Ability to operate equipment, refuse lift trucks, pickup trucks, and tractors.
Ability to record information accurately as is necessary to perform the job responsibilities.
Knowledge and ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical malfunctions and perform necessary repairs.
