Position Information

Seeking a highly motivated person to join our team at The University of California, Riverside. The successful candidate will, under supervision, successfully maintain three honeybee apiaries on campus. The individual will join a group of scientists and students that focus on research and teaching activities on insect pollinator health, especially the study of immunity, reproduction and ecology of bees (see https://ciber.ucr.edu). The main aim of the group is to use state of the art research approaches in close collaboration with beekeepers to develop novel approaches to better manage pollinator health and thereby safeguard bees and their pollination services in the future. The budgeted hiring range is $56,563.92 - $69,634.80.

Experience

Experience Requirement
Minimum of 3 years constructing and maintaining commercial honeybee hives and maintaining bee apiaries. A bachelors degree in a directly related field may be substituted for up to four years of experience. Required
Documented experience with bee breeding methods including parasite identification, disease management, hive health monitoring, honey, pollen, wax production and processing, queen breeding including grafting and re-queening, drone and worker breeding. Required
Demonstrated experience with laboratory and shop equipment related to beekeeping (balances, microscopes, basic glassware, various saws, drills, tools, safety equipment). Required
Demonstrated supervisory experience over untrained workers. Preferred
Experience with interacting and collaborative research with industry partners. Preferred

Minimum Requirements

Ability to maintain detailed records with regard to hive maintenance and performance, and daily activities as related to ongoing experiments.
Demonstrated familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work in a cross-disciplinary, multicultural, team
Ability to independently lift 40lbs.
Demonstrated ability and history of successfully interacting with commercial beekeepers.
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions and ask questions when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with the use of Schley artificial insemination equipment.

Familiarity and experience in organizing outreach events.

A basic understanding of beekeeping practices as performed in and utilized in the State of California.
