Position Information

Under direction of the PI (Perring) and Cooperator Dr. Carmen Gispert, this position will several research projects taking place in the Coachella Valley Agricultural Region. The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring and changing traps for the South American Palm Weevil, a potentially serious pest of date palms in the Valley. In addition, incumbent will assist with date palm insect research and table grape studies as needed. Please note this is a part- time up to 60% of time role.

Minimum Requirements

Familiarity with crops grown in the Coachella Valley and the location of citrus and grape vineyards in the Valley.
Familiar with the roads that intersect the agricultural fields in the Coachella Valley
Skilled at identifying palm weevil insects, and other insects that may be caught in traps.
Skill in keeping detailed records of trap catches and forwarding data to UCR in an organized format.
Ability to work in the hot climatic and other adverse weather conditions in the Coachella Valley.
Able to work weekends as needed.
Must be able to climb ladders to reach dates on palm trees.
Must be able to lift 40 lbs independently.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Experience working with date palms

Experience working in vineyards.
