Senior Nursery Technician

Position Information

Under direction, provide greenhouse support activities for the (CNAS) College of Natural Agricultural Sciences. Will perform day-to-day greenhouse semi-skilled activities in a wide array of greenhouses, lath houses and screen houses. Will include procurement of supplies, fulfilling work orders, keeping records, and steam pasteurizing. The budgeted hiring range is $44,244.72 to $47,877.84.

As a condition of employment, you will be required to comply with the University of California SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program Policy. All Covered Individuals under the policy must provide proof of Full Vaccination or, if applicable, submit a request for Exception (based on Medical Exemption, Disability, and/or Religious Objection) or Deferral (based on pregnancy) no later than the applicable deadline. For new University of California employees, the applicable deadline is eight weeks after their first date of employment.

Six years of experience in nursery techniques including demonstrated supervisory ability when applicable; or technical gardening school education and three years of experience in nursery techniques including demonstrated supervisory ability when applicable. Required
Demonstrated experience with establishing and maintaining automatic irrigation systems. Required

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge in pest management including pest identification, pesticide application equipment, general use of pesticides, phototoxicity and the safe handling of pesticides and other hazardous materials.
Ability to organize work activities; coordinate and communicate effectively and professionally with subordinates, colleagues, supervisors, and researchers using tact and diplomacy.
Knowledge of and experience with Windows computer software, web technologies, and e-mail.
Must understand basic plant needs/requirements such as temperatures, nutrients, light quality, day length.
Skill in operation of all equipment associated with greenhouses, head houses, general research sites and pesticide application and storage.
Ability to coordinate and prioritize with a high degree of accuracy and organization; detail-oriented, good problem solving ability. Skills in oral and written communication.
Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to grow rare and unique plants under greenhouse conditions.

Knowledge of horticulture.

Knowledge or experience working with research.

Knowledge of alternative methods to control insect pests.
