Immigration Specialist and International Student Advisor (On-Site/Hybrid)

Position Information

UCR University Extension is the learner-centered continuing education division of the University of California, Riverside and offers a wide range of programs designed to meet the needs of local, regional and global students and employers. UCR University Extension has provided international programs in the areas of ESL, concurrent enrollment and professional certificates, postgraduate certificates and diplomas, academic pathway programs, academic training programs and customized training to a broad global audience since 1975.

The International Student Advisor at UCR University Extension serves as a work lead on matters related to student record maintenance and regulatory matters, provides direct services to students in F-1 and J-1 status, and contributes to programming efforts that support the international student experience in the areas of immigration, orientation, student life, academics, and career.

University Extension is a primarily remote working organization with staff who commute to campus for work as needed. Similarly, this remote position requires an incumbent with the ability to report for in-person work on campus as business needs dictate.

Budgeted hiring salary is $65,000 - $72,000, dependent on qualifications.

Experience

Experience Requirement
4 - 7 years of related experience. Required
Experience with non-traditional academic programs in a college/university setting. Preferred
Experience studying or working abroad. Preferred
Experience in advising both J and F nonimmigrant students. Required
Proficiency using a CRM system to support immigration advising services. Preferred

Special Conditions

Special Condition Requirement
U.S. citizenship or permanent residence as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State. Required

Minimum Requirements

Understanding of the federally-mandated Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated track record of creating remarkable customer service experiences.
Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
Knowledge of federal rules and regulations involving international students in F-1 status.
Knowledge of federal rules and regulations involving international exchange visitors in J-1 status.
Interpersonal skills.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
Solid verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility/authorization for international students and scholars.
Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

Preferred Qualifications

Fluency in a language other than English.

Understanding of University rules and regulations.

Knowledge of University processes and procedures.

Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
