Police Lieutenant

Position Information

Under the general direction of the Director of Campus Safety Services (Chief of Police), the Police Lieutenant is responsible for managing, directing, and planning the daily operations and long-range goals of their units. The incumbent has a critical role in the University of California Police Department as a Patrol and/or Administrative Lieutenant and provides oversight and supervision to units and programs including, but not limited to patrol, traffic, communications, special events, UNET, Community Service Officers, investigations, and crime prevention. The incumbent may act for the Director of Campus Safety Services (Chief of Police) in their absence and is responsible for all functions/tasks appropriate to the classification. Please note, University of California career employees who have passed their probationary period will receive priority consideration for this position. If a qualified pool of internal candidates is not identified, qualified external candidates may be considered at the discretion of the hiring department. A skills assessment will be required for consideration.

Education

Education Requirements

Degree Requirement
High school diploma or equivalent. Required
Ability to successfully complete other training or prerequisites as required by regulation, law or policy. Preferred
Relevant experience, training and/or four year college degree. Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Criminology or Political Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience Preferred
Completion of POST Supervisory Leadership Institute, and/or POST Command College or the National FBI Academy Preferred

Licenses

License Requirement
Possess a valid California Driver's License. Required

Certifications

Certification Requirement
Possession of a POST Supervisory certificate and successful completion of the probationary period as a sergeant. Preferred
Ability to successfully earn the POST Management certificate by completing a POST-certified 104-hour Management course within one year of appointment and serving as a Lieutenant for a period of two years. Required

8 - 13 years of related experience. Required

Minumum of three years experience supervising sworn officers in a recognized law enforcement agency. Preferred

Ability to work rotating shifts in all weather conditions and during extended periods during disaster or civil disorder. Required

Meets all other requirements for peace officers and the rank of Lieutenant as established by law and the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Required

Shift Work (hours outside standard Mon-Fri 8AM-5PM work hours) Required

Minimum Requirements

Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and possess a valid California Driver's License.
Strong knowledge of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends as applied within the University environment. Strong knowledge of current law enforcement management theory and administrative standards.
Strong ability to effectively orchestrate the ongoing deployment of multiple employees and resources. Strong ability to supervise and train staff in the relevant and necessary aspects of their duties.
Strong knowledge of budgeting and financial practices applicable to law enforcement in the University environment.
Strong ability to credibly represent the police department in an official capacity.
Broad experience performing all aspects of police officer and sergeant of police functions.
Strong ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. Strong ability to take decisive action based upon sound judgment.
Strong knowledge of law, regulation and University policy regarding public safety and law enforcement functions.
Strong ability to operate computers and other relevant or specialized technology.
Broad knowledge of use and legal application of firearms and other police weapons, equipment or tools.
