Position Information

The University Library Conservator is responsible for the preventive care and conservation treatment of flat paper items, bound materials, manuscripts, three-dimensional objects, photographs, paintings, textiles and other woven objects that are included in the general circulating collections as well as in the Special Collections & University Archives collections. This role is responsible for the execution and supervision of artifact conservation activities including handling questions with digital imaging, re-housing, condition surveys, and storage upgrades and will also provide expertise to support acquisitions, loans, exhibitions and other endeavors fundamental to the UCR Library operations.The Conservator is also expected to coordinate and/or contribute to other Library preservation needs such as, but not limited to, fine art, emergency management, and environmental monitoring. The successful candidate will provide training and supervision of specialists, technicians, volunteers and others as assigned.

This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter and will be required to complete trainings and comply with CANRA. Must pass FBI/Department of Justice background check.

Finalists will be asked to conduct a presentation (including providing visual representation of work samples) as part of the interview process.

Minimum Requirements

Studio arts and manual skill in treatment of materials.
Specialized field knowledge.
Visual acuity.
Knowledge of the technology and materials of artistic, historic, scientific and technological objects and of the chemical and physical processes of their deterioration.
Ability to accurately budget and manage projects.
Highly developed expertise in the principles and practice of general material conservation.
Knowledge of art history or cultural history related to specialty.
Knowledge of current conservation principles and practices, material science, and the history of book binding and conservation.
Advanced knowledge of conservation ethics, principles, and techniques as well as an awareness of and commitment to professional museum best practices through membership in professional organizations and attendance at meetings, workshops, and seminars.
Highly skilled in performing a wide variety of conservation procedures with manual dexterity and sensitivity to materials.
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced team environment within a diverse and complex organization. Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement projects.
Ability to foster a respectful, cooperative, professional and courteous work environment, maintain confidentiality and employ tact and diplomacy.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds, including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors and alumni.
Advanced knowledge of artists? fabrication techniques of prints, drawings, books, and photographs

Preferred Qualifications

Basic photography skills.

Knowledge of scientific studies (chemistry, physics, materials science, biology).

Supervisory and leadership skills and the ability to collaborate with others in establishing priorities.

Highly developed oral and written communication skills.

Experience managing multiple concurrent projects while maintaining flexibility and shifting priorities and deadlines.

Knowledge of emergence preparedness and emergency response.
