Position Information

The Building Mechanical performs journey-level work related to the repair, maintenance, service, installation, modification, troubleshooting, inspection and monitoring of commercial/industrial building mechanical equipment, climate control systems, heating and ventilation systems, fume hoods, hydronic systems, heat exchangers, fans and fan motors, pumps and pump motors, electronic controls and pneumatic controls. Supports the maintenance and operation of other campus and central plant equipment including but not limited to high pressure steam systems, devices and accessories, Energy Management Control Systems (EMS), other utility distribution, condensate return systems and scientific equipment such as autoclaves. Provides independent inspection and response to requests for repair or installation of campus equipment. Executes the preventative maintenance on all equipment and systems through changing belts, bearings and filters. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing and maintenance (corrective and/or preventative) performed. Updates equipment documentation, specifications and drawings, as needed. Reviews and updates all shop logs, both paper and electronic according to updates and changes. Responds to emergency situations to mitigate and/or resolve immediate building mechanical concerns or safety issues. Reviews and creates blueprints/drawings, and specifications for new construction and retrofit/renovation projects according to building code requirements. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of resolving immediate safety concerns. Performs all job duties in adherence with University and departmental safety guidelines. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Handling Certification, "608 Universal". Required
Steam Engineer Unlimited License. Preferred

Experience

Experience Requirement
4 years of journey-level experience in building mechanical systems preventative maintenance and repair; and/or completion of a certified apprenticeship training; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Required
Experience in the operation of building systems, coils, shafting and pulleys, valves and piping systems. Required
Experience in the operation, maintenance, calibration, repair, installation, diagnosis, and inspection of industrial systems, pumps, climate control systems, heat exchange systems and high pressure steam systems. Required
Experience with Energy Management Control Systems (EMS) and other control systems (electronic, digital, analog, mechanical and pneumatic). Required
Experience in installation, maintenance and repair of various industrial/chemical fume hoods. Required
Experience operating shop equipment and tools common to the skilled trade. Required
Experience using and maintaining of building mechanical tools and equipment such as pipe threading machine, welding equipment, drill press, and various hand and power tools. Required
Experience and/or certification of training in fork lifts, lifts and/or boom truck operations. Preferred
Experience and ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, emergency requests and ability to choose the proper materials or equipment to accomplish work in the most expeditious and safe manner. Preferred
Experience working with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and ability to provide exemplary customer service. Preferred

Special Conditions

Special Condition Requirement
Hired candidate must successfully pass a background check through the DOJ and FBI prior to appointment start date. Required
Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination prior to appointment start date. Required
Must possess or obtain a Valid CA Driver License in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Required
Shift Work (hours outside standard Mon-Fri 8AM-5PM work hours). Required
Must wear University issued ID badge and uniform. Required

Minimum Requirements

Skilled use and maintaining of building mechanical tools and equipment such as pipe threading machine, welding equipment, drill press, and various hand and power tools.
Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, and provide exceptional customer service.
Knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected.
Willingness and ability to work weekends and holidays. Ability to work occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime, emergency call-back, and a flexible schedule as needed.
Ability to record information accurately as is necessary to perform the job responsibilities.
Skill and ability to install, maintain, and repair various industrial/chemical fume hoods.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Skill in operating shop equipment and tools common to the skilled trade.
Ability to effectively communicate and understand safety regulations and hazards.
Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
Skill in reading and analyzing construction and renovation project plans.
Skill in proper application of precision measuring and calibration equipment.
Ability to estimate time, methods and materials needed from construction documents. Ability to read and understanding documents such as complex technical procedures, work instructions, blue prints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
Knowledge and skill working with Energy Management Control Systems (EMS) and other control systems (electronic, digital, analog, mechanical and pneumatic).
Knowledge in the operation, maintenance, calibration, repair, installation, diagnosis, and inspection of industrial systems, pumps, climate control systems, heat exchange systems and high pressure steam systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Basic knowledge and technical skills with computer programs and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Design Cad 2, etc.).

Knowledge of UC/UCR policies and systems.
