Financial Aid Counselor (Hybrid)

Position Information

Participates with other counselors, the Assistant Director and Associate Director in the ongoing development and enhancement of the UCR Financial Aid Office processing system (Banner); presents financial aid information both on and off-campus to groups of students, prospective students; active contributor to discussions and recommends change when appropriate to better meet the needs to the populations served; use an understanding of the special needs and problems experienced by students from disadvantaged backgrounds and address these needs by offering supportive guidance, options and when appropriate, financial assistance. Provide guidance on supplementary forms and explanations needed to meet individual circumstances; composes correspondence to students and other clients relative to aid eligibility and office policy and procedures; performs special assignments and other duties as assigned by the Director of Financial Aid, Associate Director, or Assistant Director. This position will be hybrid. Schedule will be 2 days in office and 3 days remote, but could vary depending on the needs of the department.

Budgeted Range: $52,100.00 (minimum) - $61,500.00 (1st Quartile).

All Covered Individuals under the policy must provide proof of Full Vaccination or, if applicable, submit a request for Exception (based on Medical Exemption, Disability, and/or Religious Objection) or Deferral (based on pregnancy) no later than the applicable deadline. For new University of California employees, the applicable deadline is ten weeks after their first date of employment.

Must successfully complete a background check through the University's background check agency prior to your start date, and a fingerprint check through the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigations.

Minimum Requirements

Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Organizational skills and ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
Proficiency with standard office software, internet, and email applications. Basic knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
Ability to calculate financial aid with attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to assess processes and recommend improvements. Good interpersonal skills.
Experience using complex databases.
Problem identification and critical thinking skills.
Demonstrates written and verbal communication skills. Active listening skills. Possesses customer service orientation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to exercise advising and counseling skills by analyzing a variety of factors (financial data, family circumstances, social background, academic status, educational goals) and applies knowledge of federal, state, University, and outside agency laws, regulations, and policies to determine students' eligibility for various types of financial aid.

Ability to travel to on and off campus presentations, workshops, and conferences. Ability to occasionally work overtime during peak periods.

Ability to work effectively with all levels within the University and develop informal, cooperative relationships among diverse, multifunctional departments; anticipate clients' needs expectations and requirements.

Working knowledge of federal, state, private, and institutional loan policies and procedures
