Position Information

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Libraries is seeking nominations and applications for an experienced, energetic, and innovative professional to fill the position of Web Developer and User Interface Designer in the Web Services and Design Unit of the Information Technology and Systems Division.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Information Technology and Systems, the Web Developer and User Interface Designer will provide technology services to the UCR University Libraries organization and will have strong graphic design, website, and editorial skills. Duties include, but are not limited to, supporting, designing, and developing internal and public websites, web-based applications, social media sites, and multimedia content. Innovative applications will include new initiatives in digital collections, scholarly communication, and resource discovery.




The Web Developer and User Interface Designer will work closely with the Libraries' Web Development Management Team, and will operate by developing, enhancing, testing, and using repeatable and well-documented processes and procedures to achieve an efficient, reliable, and sustainable web services environment. Best practices and security are included in all our efforts. Teamwork, collaboration, and the ability to tactfully communicate and share ideas with an interdisciplinary group of staff, patrons, and colleagues is essential. Our environment is dynamic, challenging, and requires the ability to handle shifting priorities. Occasional efforts outside of normal business hours may be required.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in digital design, digital media, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
3+ years hands-on experience in a production web services environment, with progressively responsible experience designing, developing, and managing complex websites.
Proficiency in user interface design for websites, web-based applications, mobile devices, and social media.
Proficiency with website and graphical design techniques.
Proficiency with multimedia design tools such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Premiere.
Proficiency with front-end web technologies such as HTML, CSS, XML, and SQL.
Familiarity with PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, and Apache.
Knowledge of web taxonomies, and familiarity with web accessibility guidelines, including ADA and W3C.
Experience in project management.
Familiarity with diverse metadata formats, such as MARC, MODS, and Dublin Core.
Experience performing usability testing.
Experience analyzing website performance, usability, and analytics.
Experience in evaluating, selecting, and implementing software to support web initiatives.
Skill in planning and mapping website architectures.
Knowledge of best practices for cross-platform design.
Familiarity with website security guidelines and trends.
Experience using content management systems (CMS) such as Drupal and WordPress.
Experience with blogging tools and techniques.
Experience with digital production scanners and related imaging devices
Proficiency with Microsoft Office productivity tools (Word, OneNote, Excel, PowerPoint)
Experience designing and developing test plans, procedures, and related techniques for quality assurance.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work and communicate professionally and successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni.
Ability to work on multiple projects with constantly shifting priorities.
Familiarity with multimedia delivery devices, including media players, projectors, and digital signage systems.
Ability to clearly document complex technical processes and procedures.
Ability to take direction and maintain a positive attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency with database design, SQL queries, object-oriented PHP, Python, MySQL, and Apache.
Experience with the Drupal and Omeka content management systems.
Working knowledge of mobile design and development.
Experience with website migration.
Experience working in an academic environment.
Experience with Atlassian Confluence and/or other wiki software.
Experience managing large and complex projects.
Experience working on complex multimedia implementations.
Experience with the jQuery JavaScript library.
Experience with the Bootstrap front-end (CSS) framework.
Experience with Linux and Windows system administration.
