Resident Director Residential Services (3 Openings)

Position Information

The Resident Director (RD) is a full-time, 12-month, live-in position and serves as a member of the Residence Life Professional team. The RD is responsible for resident orientation to community living; resident counseling; policy enforcement and jurisprudence; on-site crisis response; student organization advising; student programming; student staff recruitment, selection, training and evaluation; housing management and special projects. The RD provides a variety of support services to the residential students and assists with the management of the housing program. The residential facilities include residence halls, apartments and family housing.

Our professional staff is charged with creating welcoming communities in the residence hall and campus apartments through meaningful interaction with our students in our academic and theme communities, large scale programs, conduct & advocacy and residential student leadership organization. We are committed to on-going development opportunities on-campus, in the western region of the United States and through national involvement.

UCR's Housing, Dining & Residential Services (HDRS) is one of the campuses largest units, providing housing to about 30% of our students, dining for entire campus in residential and retail facilities, programming and support through a robust residential life program, conferencing and catering services, and child development care to our faculty, staff and students. HDRS employs 450 career employees and over 800 student employees. HDRS departments include Assignments & Accounts, Business & Financial Services, Capital Programs, Catering Services, Child Development, Conference Services, Dining Services, Information Technologies, Marketing, Operations, and Residential Life. HDRS reports to the Division of Student Affairs.

Minimum Requirements

1. Graduation from College, preferably with training in an applicable or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. One year of job experience in residential life or a related field.

3. Demonstrated experience in a supervisory role including responsibility for selecting, training, evaluating and performance management for student residential staff.

4. Facilitate community development through needs assessment, understanding of student development theory and implementation.

5. Demonstrated experience to show awareness and address needs of students of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds, with the ability to resolve conflicts and defuse emotionally charged situations.

6. Proven skill to establish and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships with college students, residential student staff and professional staff teams.

7. Provide consultation, mediation, and referral on matters related to resident issues and concerns.

8. Contribute and coordinate department efforts including opening, closing, prospective student tours and administrative processes.

9. Interpret university policies and procedures and adjudicate policy violations as primary judicial hearing officer.

10. Hired candidate must successfully pass a background investigation through the Department of Justice and have a valid California drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Masters degree in Higher Education Administration or Counseling or related area.

2. Previous experience supervising residential student staff and/advising residence hall government.

3. Prior experience in leadership development, student programming and student group advising.

4. Prior experience in and knowledge of principles, practices and philosophies associated with University housing; with a working knowledge of the laws governing university housing.

5. Ability to interpret, support, and apply UCR campus policies and procedures.

6. Demonstrated ability to perform positively in teams and in collaborative environments.

7. Demonstrated dedication to student experience.
