Position Information

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Foundation Relations (Development unit), the Director of Foundation Relations: aligns fundraising activities with the vision, goals and priorities of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement. Incumbent will provide high-level support and counsel, manage prospects, work with central development colleagues on partner strategy, and serve as liaison with appropriate campus departments (colleges, schools, university libraries, student affairs, extension, etc.) to grant-making foundations and relevant government agencies. The responsibilities of the Director of Foundation Relations will be in support of programs across the campus, focusing more closely on assigned units under the direction of the Executive Director. The Director for Foundation Relations is also expected to be visible within the UCR academic and development communities. This is a two-year, renewable contract position which includes the same employee benefits afforded career employees. Minimum Requirements

-Bachelor's degree in a related field.

-Four to six years of experience in fundraising or research administration, preferably in higher education. Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of major gift fundraising, preferably within a major research university environment.

-Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for comprehensive fund-granting agency engagement strategies with research universities.


-Skill in communicating effectively and persuasively, both orally and in writing, about partnerships with universities in general and in particular as it applies to UCR. Demonstrated exceptional writing ability is required, especially as it pertains to writing competitive peer-reviewed grant proposals.


-Experience and success in collaborating in a complex development program within a major university. Deep understanding of academic, research and education functions and operation principles of a major research university.


-Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including cultivation, stewardship and donor recognition. Ability to direct the design of strategies for cultivation and solicitation of prospective partner organizations.

-Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters as they relate to sensitive donor relations issues.


-Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with deans and directors, academic and University leaders and volunteers to achieve revenue generation goals. Ability to work effectively with faculty and program directors from various academic backgrounds in devising, analyzing, modifying, implementing, and evaluating programs.

-Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills including the ability to work effectively with individuals from various status ranks from diverse institutional and community sectors to achieve common objectives.

-Successful experience using a broad range of communication methods to shape management initiatives and build alliances and partnerships.

Preferred Qualifications

-Advanced degree.

-Knowledge of a broad range of academic and institutional issues related to a major research university environment.

-Experience with fundraising in capital and comprehensive campaigns.
