Position Information

The Access Services Desk Assistant interprets and administers circulation/reserve policies as they apply to library patrons. Provides circulation services to a wide variety of patrons on a regular basis in accordance with the desk schedule.

This recruitment has two (2) openings. One position is located at the Orbach Science Library reporting to Elisha Hankins. The incumbent must be able to work Monday 7:15 am - 3:45 pm, Wednesday - Friday 9:30 am - 4:30 pm and Saturday 8:45 am -1:15 pm. The other position is located in the Rivera Library reporting to Leslie Settle. The incumbent must be able to work Monday 7:15 am - 3:45 pm, Tuesday - Thursday 10:30 am - 5:30 pm and Saturday 12:45 pm - 5:15 pm. Both position are 75% (part-time).

Minimum Requirements

Strong customer service experience.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni.
Ability to accurately apply a wide variety of policies and procedures.
Ability to successfully monitor student assistant(s) in maintaining order in the library and assigning tasks when appropriate.
Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing in a positive and constructive manner.
Ability to perform accurate, detailed work.
Keyboarding skills sufficient to enter data into an on-line system quickly and accurately.
Ability to work with constant interruptions, to remain calm under pressure and handle a variety of responsibilities simultaneously.
Ability to organize work, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
Ability to display initiative and remain flexible in a fast-paced and changing environment.
Ability to work independently and exercise reasonable judgment in applying appropriate guidelines to specific tasks and in making decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships.
Experience using the Circulation module of an Integrated Library System, such as Millennium.
Knowledge and skill to work with computers and software such as MS Office, email programs, and the internet.
The position located at the Orbach Library must be able to work Monday 7:15 am - 3:45 pm, Wednesday - Friday 9:30 am - 4:30 pm and Saturday between 8:45 am - 5:15 pm.
The position located at the Rivera Library must be able to work Monday 7:15 am - 3:45 pm, Tuesday - Thursday 10:30 am - 5:30 pm and Saturday between 8:45 am - 5:15 pm.
Ability to work flexible hours for staffing in back up situations including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Hours may vary from quarter to quarter.
Ability to foster a respectful, cooperative, professional and courteous environment, maintain confidentiality, and employ tact and diplomacy.
Must be able to bend, stoop, lift, and push loaded book trucks weighing up to approximately 250 lbs.
Must be able to stand and move about the library for long periods of time.
Ability to successfully pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.
Knowledge and demonstrated use of an online Accounts Receivable System, such as Banner.
Experience using a document scanner and Adobe Acrobat software in scanning and manipulating scanned images.
Experience working in an academic library environment.
Hands-on experience in a Circulation Services department.
