Tribal Liaison - CCNN Coordinator

Position Information

Under the general direction of the Director of the California Center for Native Nations (CCNN or the Center), the Tribal Liaison/Center Coordinator/Associate Director oversees the day-to-day operations of the Center, which serves as an interdisciplinary research center based in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, UC Riverside. This high profile position has both external and internal-facing leadership responsibilities. This person will be experienced and culturally competent in building relationships with tribal nations and will serve as a liaison between the CCNN and representatives of tribal nations nearby, throughout California, and beyond. The successful candidate must possess the ability to effectively represent and advocate on behalf of UCR Native American Studies, Indigenous communities and CCNN-affiliated faculty. The Coordinator will also liaise with the campus Native Student Programs and academic units to engage with and respond to the needs and interests of the Native undergraduate and graduate student communities (i.e., including those of American Indian, Pacific Islander, Native Alaskan, and other Indigenous descent). References will be requested including tribal references.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required
Master's Degree in American Indian/Native American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Higher Education Administration, Public Administration or a related field. Preferred

Experience

4 - 7 years of related experience. Required
Minimum 5 years of experience working with Native American students or Native American studies faculty in higher education. Preferred

Minimum Requirements

Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and/or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees.
Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
Knowledge of a variety of administrative operations activities such as events planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines.
Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Strong skills in short term planning, analysis and problem-solving and customer service.
Knowledge of tribal protocols, cultures, histories, sovereignty, and government relations, particularly for California Native nations, but also for American Indian/Native American and First Nations communities as a whole.
Demonstrated ability in securing grants and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) development.

Preferred Qualifications

Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs. Advanced knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.

Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and/or personnel management.

Ability to communicate across cultural lines to include interpretation of research and policy between UCR/CCNN and tribal governments.

Analytical ability to interpret and translate CCNN research outcomes to general public and to Native community partners.

Excellent presentation skills and experience delivering (policy level) briefings.
