Position Information

Under the direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Governmental & Community Relations, the Assistant Director of Advocacy and Institutional Relations supports the department's charge to build relationships, enhance the University's presence, and generates support for UC Riverside's mission of education, research and public service. Major areas of focus and responsibility include regional and state advocacy, governmental and institutional relations, outreach, communications, public policy analysis, program and event coordination and research. The budgeted hiring maximum is $108,000.

Advanced knowledge of assigned area of responsibility, for example, the campus and/or medical center scientific community.
Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including skill to produce information that is appropriately presented and effectively received by target constituencies.
Advanced project management skills, including skills to plan and implement successful events.
Advanced knowledge of the campus and/or medical center, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements, issues of concern and infrastructure.
Advanced knowledge of practices and procedures associated with building and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of internal and external constituencies.
Active listening skills, including advanced critical thinking and analytical skills.
Advanced skills to read, interpret, understand and respond to pending and proposed legislation, including skills to write effective position statements and draft proposed legislation.
Demonstrated ability to disseminate and respond to sensitive and confidential information, issues and requests generated by others such as legislators, UC Office of the President, campus leaders, advocates, donors and internal and external constituencies.
Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently to prioritize and meet deadlines with frequent interruptions and flexibility to changing priorities.
Possess traits of good judgement, confidentiality and discretion in communicating with colleagues and constituents.
Ability to interact diplomatically with campus leaders, community stakeholders, and public officials in the best interest of UCR and public higher education.

Advanced knowledge of issues of concern in higher education.
Advanced knowledge of the legislative process, including organization procedures and the budget and appropriations processes.
Familiarity with and understanding of the issues and dynamics of Inland Southern California.
Strong knowledge of emerging and established social media technologies, platforms, and channels.
Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish.
