Position Information

The Art Lab & Gallery Assistant - Lab Ast 3 reports directly to the Sculpture Lab & Painting/Drawing Lab Supervisor (SRA III) for the Department of ART, with a dotted line reporting to the Financial and Administrative Officer for the Department. This position is responsible for assisting Art Lab Supervisors in the art labs, supporting and adherence to department and campus standards for the art labs within the Art department and the Phyllis Gill Gallery. This position will serve as a backup to our Sculpture, Painting, Drawing, and Photography Lab Managers. This position is also responsible for organizing, planning, and purchasing of required materials for the Phyllis Gill Gallery. This position works with the faculty, students, and classes to assist with install and deinstall of art exhibitions at the Phyllis Gill Gallery. Included in these responsibilities are working closely with other staff, Art Lab Supervisors, Art Faculty and Staff, etc. regarding general facilities maintenance, safety, and security of the space. This position is a limited position with a maximum of 1,000 hours worked with a potential to change to career status.

Education Requirements

Degree Requirement
Graduation from high school or a general Education diploma and two years of lab experience or two years of college in related courses or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Required
Bachelors Degree in Art, or related fields. Knowledge of contemporary art, sculpture, painting/drawing, photography, gallery exhibitions, and related tools, equipment, and technology or related experience. Preferred

Licenses

Valid CA Drivers License Required

Experience

Experience Requirement
Experience in construction techniques to fabricate exhibition elements/furnishings. Preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft office, Data entry, and e-mail software. Required
Experience working in a laboratory and/or art studio. Preferred
Experience with Instagram. Preferred
Experience working in a shop environment with noise and dust. Preferred
Experience using a variety of power and hand tools Required
Experience in training others in the safe use of tools and equipment, and safety culture. Preferred

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge of gallery installation techniques, tools and materials.
Knowledge of techniques, equipment, and materials used in sculpture (wood, metal, ceramics, etc.)
Good oral, written, presentation, and communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills to effectively work with a diverse group of faculty, students and staff.
Ability to drive and walk to pick up and move materials between facilities and safely move large items.
Ability to use ladders.
Ability to work with tools, equipment, machinery, and materials while adhering to safety standards.

Preferred Qualifications

Proven record of installing fine arts exhibits under established budgetary constraints and firm exhibition deadlines.

Ability to work with and manage exhibitions with faculty, instructors, students and classes.

General familiarity with photography, including printing and digital editing software.
